Overview of the School of Marxism

In November 1949 after the founding of People’s Republic of China, the Marxism Research Office of the Shanghai Russian School(the predecessor of Shanghai International Studies University, SISU)was set up in order to improve the teaching of ideological and political theory courses. It then went through several stages of development, including the Marxist-Leninist Research Department in 1977 and the Social Science Research Department in 1992.

The School of Marxism Studies was founded in May 2015, and credited as model School among universities in Shanghai in 2017, and further as the characteristic School in 2023. The School of Marxism Studies provides ideological and political theory courses to all undergraduate and graduate students of SISU, conducts research in Marxism studies, builds a complete Marxist discipline, put in place teaching and research teams, and organizes activities to give back to the community. It has been devoted to improving the layout of disciplines, strengthening interdisciplinary integration, advancing the building of a complete Marxist discipline system, enhancing the training of high-calibre talents with a global vision, upgrading ideological and political theory courses, and promoting research in Marxism studies.

In 2006, the School of Marxism Studies was authorized to grant the Master's degree in the second-level discipline — Ideological and Political Education. In 2021, it was approved to confer the Master's degree in the first-level discipline — Marxist Theory. Currently, the School of Marxism Studies has 25 full-time teachers, including 5 professors and 10 associate professors, and 17 of them serve as Master's and doctoral supervisors. With solid academic and research background, they are all graduates of well-known universities and research institutions such as Fudan University, Renmin University of China, Wuhan University, Nanjing University, East China Normal University, Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, Shanghai International Studies University,  the Central Party School of the Chinese Communist Party, and Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences.

The School has established four research centres — Centre for Innovative Research in Marxist Studies, Centre for the Study of Modern Chinese Society and Economy, Research Centre for the Global Influence of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics, and Centre for the Study of Chinese and Foreign Economic Philosophy.

The Master's program in the second-level discipline of Ideological and Political Education began to take in students in 2007 and has 58 graduates so far. Some of the graduates are now teaching at major universities and colleges, some of them are working for government agencies and scientific research institutes, and some of them are pursuing doctoral degrees in Marxism studies. In 2021, the scholarships and awards received by our students include: China National Scholarship, Shanghai Student Leadership Award, and Shanghai Outstanding Graduate Award.

As a demonstration school of Marxism studies in Shanghai, the School is an important research partner of the SISU branch of the Research Centre for the Ideals Guiding the Building of the Communist Party of China. Our practice of combining the foreign language teaching and the ideological and political education has been reported by China Central Television and Guangming Daily. SISU is awarded by the Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China one of the three pilot universities to integrate the multi-lingual versions of Xi Jinping: the Governance of China into university education, textbooks, and classrooms. We believe a complete Marxist theory discipline will play an important role in effectively conveying China's views and positions to the world.
